The event is happening in Tauranga thanks to one very passionate advocate, Mike Warnes.
Mike became an amputee around 18 months ago and discovered the Disabled Surfers Association after attending a Have A Go Day at Piha last year, just six months after his amputation. Witnessing the joy and confidence that the day gave to people in the disabled community left a lasting impression on him.
A keen surfer himself, Mike knew this was something the Bay needed too – and he’s made it happen. Thanks to his drive, this will be the first Have A Go Day ever held in the Bay of Plenty.
Mike and the DSANZ team are busy spreading the word throughout the Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Papamoa communities, rallying volunteers to help make the day a success. Keen to get involved? All you need to do is turn up on the day.
For now, organisers are hoping for a great turnout in Papamoa for what’s shaping up to be a truly unforgettable day on the beach.
DSANZ is a not-for-profit, fully volunteer-run organisation and branch of Disabled Surfers Association Australia (DSAA), who lead the way internationally in adaptive surfing. Their mission is simple – they aim to put “Smiles On Dials” by helping people with disabilities of all ages experience the ocean in a safe and supported way.
Let’s spread the word and help make this an epic day in the water!
