From modest beginnings to regional leadership – Rachel and Neil Kumar reflect on 20 years

CrestClean CEO Grand McLaughlan presents North Harbour Regional Manager Rachel and Neil Kumar with their 20-year Long Service Award.

Twenty years ago, Neil Kumar had no plans to own a cleaning business. He was working as a CNC operator while his wife, Rachel, worked at Tasti Products. But when Rachel discovered CrestClean and saw the opportunity it offered, she convinced Neil to take a chance.

Rachel began researching the business and arranged a meeting with Auckland Central Regional Manager Dries Mangnus. Before long, the couple had topped up their home loan to purchase a franchise, a decision that would ultimately change the course of their lives.

Rachel started managing the franchise on her own with a modest annual turnover of $40,000 in 2006. Neil initially helped alongside his full-time job, but as the business continued to grow, the couple began to recognise the opportunities that CrestClean could offer.

“We both began to see the potential with CrestClean,” says Neil.

Before long, Neil left his day job to commit to the franchise full-time. Twenty years on, that decision has taken the couple from franchise owners to North Harbour Master Franchisees, where they have established a very healthy business.

Taking on the North Harbour region in 2012 brought a significant change in responsibilities. Instead of looking after their own customers, the couple suddenly found themselves supporting an entire network of franchisees and their customers.

“Every day is different — sometimes full of surprises — and I need to be ready for anything. It’s a much bigger responsibility, but also incredibly rewarding to lead and support the whole team,” says Neil.

While the role comes with greater responsibility, Neil says the rewards far outweigh the challenges. Along the way, the couple have helped many franchisees achieve their own goals.

“It makes me extremely happy to hear the success stories of my team. Seeing franchisees achieve their goals is one of the best parts of this job.”

Working together as business partners for more than two decades has not been without its challenges, but it has also taught the couple some valuable lessons.

“We’ve fought, we’ve disagreed, and we’ve always caught up and moved forward. That’s the key — staying committed to the partnership and the bigger picture.”

Neil is always looking ahead to what the future holds for CrestClean. He says he’s proud to be part of a people-focused organisation that values quality, training, and health and safety.

“CrestClean truly celebrates the success of its people, and that’s what excites me about the future.”

Twenty years after Rachel first suggested buying a franchise, that decision has grown into a remarkable success story. Congratulations, Rachel and Neil — CrestClean is lucky to have you!
