A little friendly competition brought plenty of pride to Otonga Road Primary School in Rotorua last term.
The Cleanest Classroom Competition was embraced by Year 2 teacher Amanda Jeffery, who wanted to encourage students to take pride in their learning spaces. There to support Amanda were Rotorua franchise owners Baljeet Singh and Sharanpreet Kaur, along with their employee Simranjeet, who took on the important job of judging the classrooms throughout the term.
Each week, the classrooms were checked for the students’ efforts in keeping their spaces tidy and ready for the cleaning team.
After weeks of fantastic effort, Rooms 9 and 10 were named the overall winners, impressing the judges with the care they showed for their classrooms. Sharanpreet and Baljeet returned to the school to congratulate the winning classes and treat them to a pizza lunch.
Otonga Road Principal Gareth Cunliffe loved seeing the students get involved, take the competition seriously and enjoy the reward that came with their efforts.
“The students of Otonga School have really enjoyed the challenge of the ‘Cleanest Classroom’. They have been excited to work towards trying to win the competition by making sure their floors are clear and chairs and other items are out of the way for the wonderful cleaners to do their job.
The teachers appreciated having an extra motivation for the children at ‘tidy up time’. The weekly certificate winners were proud to win, and the term winners loved sharing a pizza and meeting the cleaners!

Rotorua/Taupō regional manager Kelsey Gibson says it was great to see students take pride in their classrooms and understand the importance of working together to keep them clean.
